From bad to worse: After the Conor McGregor melee cut three preliminary fights from UFC 223, now Saturday's main event is scrapped

A difficult week for the UFC grew even more so on Friday morning when the mixed martial art promotion's president Dana White announced that featherweight champion Max Holloway is medically unfit to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov for Conor McGregor's vacated lightweight title.

This comes after three of Saturday's fights at UFC 223 in Brooklyn were cancelled in the aftermath of McGregor's violent attack on a van of MMA fighters that included Nurmagomedov and ultimately led to the Irishman's arrest on Thursday night.

Holloway - Replacement - Fighter - Nurmagomedov - Days

Holloway himself was a replacement fighter, having previously agreed to face Nurmagomedov on just six days' notice after original challenger, Tony Ferguson, injured a knee. But Holloway was unable to reach the weight limit for the bout Friday in New York and was ruled out by the UFC medical team.

There was no immediate word if a replacement fighter would face Nurmagomedov, who appeared to be the target of McGregor's wrath at Barclays Center following Thursday's press conference.



The incident unfolded on the arena's event level as Nurmagomedov and other MMA fighters sat in a bus as it inched its way towards the truck elevators.

McGregor and his crew were not scheduled to attend the media event, but managed to get into the arena and walked down to the event level, where the 29-year-old Irishman immediately threw a dolly through one of the van's windows, covering several passengers in glass.

He and his cohorts continued to try to get into the van and break its windows, but were ultimately held back by security and other onlookers.

McGregor - Counts - Assault - Count - Mischief

McGregor faces three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief.
