If God is good, why __________________________________________?
Fill in the blank however you like. Our doubts about God’s goodness are natural, given the kind of world we live in. If we grant that God is both all-good and all-powerful, why does he often fail to prevent evil?

Perhaps there is no answer that will satisfy people reeling from an incursion of evil into their lives or into the lives of those they love. Healing requires time. Even so, we must attempt at least a partial answer lest we be forced to admit a falsehood—that there are limits to God’s power, knowledge, and goodness.
Let me start by reminding you of a rather strange word—automaton. An automaton is “a person or animal that acts in a monotonous, routine manner, without active intelligence.” Why start with that particular word? Because if God were to eradicate evil from our world, there would be no such thing as human beings but only highly sophisticated automatons programmed to do his will.
