In its third frame, Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther is now estimated to blow past the $500 million mark domestically after taking in another $65.7 million over the weekend. That would make Marvel’s latest only the second movie to cross that line after The Avengers, and it did it a week earlier than the Joss Whedon-helmed epic. Avengers ended its run at $623 million domestically and $1.5 billion globally and thought Coogler’s film has a ways to go to top those numbers, it’s now looking more and more likely that it will indeed become the MCU’s biggest hit to date.
Meanwhile, in non-Disney land, things are looking relatively dire at the box office. Red Sparrow, the sleek spy film from Francis Lawrence and Jennifer Lawrence, looks to be in second with an estimated $17 million, while picking up some $26 million overseas. That’s not an entirely hopeful opening for a movie that likely has to make up something over $100 million to see a reasonable profit.
