The conditions this man is working in makes you really appreciate his efforts! This wet fisherman is fishing on a longline vessel.
The machine on the left is pulling in a long line which is basically a stretch of line between two buoys with hundreds of fishing hooks and bait. Usually, several are set and left floating for a period, then later retrieved.
The baited hooks are retrieved with a hydraulic 'powerblock', a v-notch wheel that the line wraps around and gets coiled away. The skipper in the wheelhouse is piloting the ship and following the groundline as it's being taken from the water by the powerblock.
The skipper will try to turn the boat to block weather from the 'hauling station' where this man is standing. However, this isn't always possible, and occasionally they'll take a wave through the hatch that can clear the deck. For fishermen, this is just another "day at the office", for most the rest of us, this looks pretty scary!
