He was formerly axed from Coronation Street after a video of him rapping about rape and violence surfaced online.

But Chris Fountain has been given a 'second chance' and will return to the small screen, despite the scandal that cost him his soap career with ITV.

Actor - Channel - Series - Girlfriends - TV

The actor, 30, will star in the channel's new series Girlfriends, after top TV writer Kay Mellor chose to hire him for the show, telling The Sun: 'He made a mistake, he can't pay for it all of his life.'

Kay, who is best known for shows such as Fat Friends and The Syndicate, has returned with another series for ITV in which she has cast Chris, Miranda Richardson and Zoe Wanamaker.

Speaking about Chris' addition to the cast, given his controversial past, she showed her support for the star and insisted 'there couldn't be anybody more sorry'.

She said: 'I think everyone deserves a second chance. If he hadn't have told me, 'I was a stupid pr**k, he wouldn't have a job.'

Mellor - Corrie - Axing - Fountain - Mistakes

Mellor added that she believes being 'blacklisted' following has Corrie axing has led to Fountain learning from his mistakes.

News of his addition to Girlfriends first came to light in July, earlier this year. Chris had announced the news on his private social media accounts, describing the day he began filming for his part in the series as 'special'.

According to The Metro, Chris, who had battled with depression following his axe from Corrie, had penned: 'After being off the screen for a long, long time, I now have the opportunity to be back doing one of the things I love and I’m incredibly grateful.

'Today is my first day filming ITV’s new drama, Girlfriends by Kay Mellor. Time to get back in the saddle, as they say!'
