She's no ordinary doll! Annabelle scares up $35m to nab top spot at the weekend U.S. box office

There are few things creepier - or, apparently, more likely to bring out horror fans - than a possessed doll.

And Annabelle: Creation proved that at the weekend box office, scaring up $35 million to snare top spot.

Film - Conjuring - Franchise - Miranda - Otto

The fourth film in the Conjuring franchise, starring Miranda Otto and Anthony LaPaglia, scored $71.7 million globally, a great return on its reported $15 million budget.

Director Christopher Nolan's World War II epic Dunkirk again came in second with $11.4 million in its fourth weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.

Mark - Rylance - Kenneth - Branagh - Tom

Co-starring Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Harry Styles and James D'Arcy, it has now racked up $363.7 million globally.

Animated comedy Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature didn't attract the big family audience of its predecessor, coming in third with just $8.9 million.

Half - Movie - Worldwide - Run

That's less than half of the original 2014 movie, which opened to $19.4 million before going on to take in $120.9 million worldwide during its run.
