Ilie Nastase banned by ITF for Serena Williams comments and Fed Cup behaviour but insists: 'Racism is NOT a delicate issue in Romania'

Ilie Nastase has made an extraordinary defence of his behaviour in the Fed Cup tie with Great Britian claiming that racism is not a 'delicate' issue in Romania and that he can count two black people among his friends.

Nastase has been banned from the Fed Cup and Davis Cup until 2019 because of his foul-mouthed comments and bad behaviour as Romania's captain during the clash in Constanta in February.

While Nastase has defended his actions by insisting he is not a racist, the International Tennis Federation said on Friday the 1973 French Open champion will not be able to work in an official capacity for a further two years, until 2021.

The 71-year-old Nastase, who was also fined $10,000 (around £7,700), has three weeks to appeal the decision.

Slam - Champion - Great - Britain - Captain

The two-time grand slam champion was overheard calling Great Britain captain Keothavong and British No 1 Johanna Konta 'f****** ****' before asking the umpire 'what's your f****** problem?' All behaviour has been condemned by the ITF.

Nastase commented on Serena Williams' unborn baby - describing the child's skin colour as 'chocolate with milk', and the ITF have responded in a statement having found him guilty of breaching their code of conduct.

'Mr. Nastase made a comment about Serena Williams's unborn child that was highly inappropriate and racially insensitive,' the ITF said.

Nastase also 'made advances of a sexual nature towards Anne Keothavong, the captain of the Great Britain team' and 'made abusive and threatening comments...
