A former West Virginia sheriff's deputy has been arrested after police say he sexually assaulted and tortured his wife by waterboarding and burning her during an attack that lasted more than a dozen hours.

Kevin Woodrum, 43, was taken into custody on Monday and charged with malicious wounding, sexual assault, kidnapping, strangulation, domestic battery and domestic assault.

According to a criminal complaint cited by the station WSAZ, Woodrum burned his wife with a lighter, cut off large chunks of his wife’s hair with scissors, sexually assaulted her, beat her and tried to waterboard her by pouring water on her face from a large cup.

Troopers responded to Woodrum's home on Chap Road in Gordon, West Virginia, on Saturday, but the former deputy refused to let them in without a warrant.

The responding officers eventually were able to speak to the victim, observing swelling and bruising on her face, according to the complaint.

The suspect's wife told the troopers that her husband had been torturing her for 13 hours.
