Fiancee of ESPN reporter who died over Christmas reveals he had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

Former ESPN reporter Edward Aschoff died from an undetectable and aggressive type of cancer that triggered an abnormal response of his immune system, his fiancee revealed Wednesday.

Using the journalist's Twitter account, Aschoff's fiancee - Katy Berteau - shared that the hospital was able to perform a lung biopsy where they identified the cause of death.

Edward - Stage - Non-Hodgkin - Lymphoma - Lungs

'Unbeknownst to us, Edward had stage 4, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in his lungs,' she posted. 'This is an aggressive type of cancer that is usually undetectable until it is very advanced.

'Both pneumonia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma can trigger HLH (hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis) in the body and that is seemingly what happened with Edward.

Decline - Days - Passing

All of this combined is what led to his very rapid decline those last few days, and ultimately his passing.'

Berteau expressed her hope that the information would provide clarity to those who adored Aschoff, adding that understanding his condition has helped her, especially 'knowing that his passing was inevitable.

She continued: 'I’m at least grateful he didn’t have to go through the painful treatment and drawn out process of battling the disease.'

'He wouldn’t have wanted to go out like that. His a*s was too vain.'

ESPN - College - Football - Reporter - Edward

ESPN college football reporter Edward Aschoff died on December 24th on his 34th birthday, the company announced.

The network said it was 'very sorry to have to share the devastating news of the tragic passing of friend and ESPN colleague Edward Aschoff'.

Aschoff - Instagram - Account - December - Pneumonia

Aschoff posted on his Instagram account on December 2 that he contracted pneumonia while covering the Michigan-Ohio State game on November 30, when temperatures in Michigan plunged to 31F.

Aschoff and his fiancee, Katy Berteau, were due to be married in April in New Orleans.
