A pair of sequels hit theaters this weekend in Disney's Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Sony's Zombieland: Double Tap, the latter arriving in theaters ten years after the original. Both will earn spots in the top three, though sandwiched between them will be WB's Joker, which looks to continue its strong run and potentially top $250 million domestically by the end of the weekend. At the same time, still in limited release, Neon's Parasite is adding 30 locations and may find its way into the top ten if it can maintain momentum from last weekend.
Looking at what will be its seventh #1 opening of the year, Disney will debut Maleficent: Mistress of Evil in over 3,700 locations. The film, which finds Angelina Jolie reprising the title role, arrives five years after the original opened with nearly $70 million and went on to gross over $758 million worldwide. However, the appetite for the sequel doesn't appear to be nearly on par with the 2014 original with the studio anticipating a debut in the mid-$40 millions, which is right around what we're expecting, though IMDb page views suggest that might even be too high.

A look at every comp we threw up against it, Mistress of Evil is pacing behind them all. This includes the likes of Dumbo, A Wrinkle in Time and Alice Through the Looking Glass. In fact, the picture IMDb page view comps paints is similar to what we were seeing prior to the launch of Gemini Man last weekend as it too lagged behind comp titles. This isn't to say Maleficent 2 is looking at a debut similar to Gemini, or even below $30 million, but it does suggest a performance closer to $40 million than $45 million may be more likely at this point.
