6.0 quake hits Puerto Rico, no damage immediately reported

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake has struck near Puerto Rico, rousing and scaring many from their sleep in the U.S. territory.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck late Monday 49 miles off the island's northwest coast at a shallow depth of six miles.

Emergency - Management - Agency - Spokeswoman - Kiara

Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Kiara Hernández tells The Associated Press that there are no immediate reports of damage.

The quake was felt across Puerto Rico and is the strongest to hit the island in recent years.

Territory - Tropical - Depression - Karen

The territory is already being battered by Tropical Depression Karen.

Earlier on Monday, Puerto Rico's governor announced that she was canceling classes and closing public agencies as Karen threatens to cause heavy flooding in the island's eastern region.

Gov - Wanda - Vázquez - National - Guard

Gov. Wanda Vázquez activated the National Guard and urged people in flood-prone areas to seek shelter.

At 11pm ET, Karen was centered 160 miles south of San Juan and moving north-northwest at 10 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. Forecasters said it was expected to become a tropical storm again, perhaps before reaching Puerto Rico.
