Block of flats in Brighton engulfed by flames as fire crews send ten fire engines to scene

A major fire has broken out at a block of flats in Brighton this evening, sending flames and thick smoke into the night sky.

Dramatic images show the residential building engulfed in flames, with the entire top floor of the three-storey block in East Sussex ablaze.

Residents - Property - Fire - Today

Residents had to evacuate the property after a fire broke out at around 8.23pm today.

Emergency services are now advising people living nearby to close their windows and doors as they continue to try and extinguish the flames.

Spokesman - East - Sussex - Fire - Rescue

A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Station said: 'We are still tackling a large fire at a residential block of flats on Pankhurst Road, Brighton.

'We now have ten appliances in attendance. We are advising all nearby residents to close windows and doors.'

Witnesses have described 'awful scenes' as the smell of smoke spreads across the entire town.

A passerby told the Brighton Argus: 'It's a scene of devastation.

'There's 8 pumps. It's a scene of devastation. The police are going through the building to check everyone is out.'
