An explosion at fireworks display left a dozen injured as revelers gathered in the state of Veracruz to celebrate Mexico's Independence Day.

About 20,000 residents lined up outside the government plaza in the city center of Xalapa late Sunday night in anticipation of the 'Grito' [Cry], an event which commemorates the call to arms by rebel priest Miguel Hidalgo on Sept. 16, 1810 at the start of the country's war of independence with Spain.

A bystander recorded the moment pyrotechnics show went awry right over Enriquez Avenue at 11pm local time.

Instead of thinning out in the sky, several large patches of flares rained down towards the crowd and sent scores of spectators running for cover.
