Joaquin Phoenix's Joker scooped the Golden Lion top prize at the 76th annual Venice Film Festival on Saturday,

Director Todd Phillips thanked 'Warner Bros. and DC for stepping out of their comfort zone and taking such a bold swing on me and this movie.'

Heaping praise on the film's star, Phoenix, the director said: 'There is no movie without Joaquin Phoenix. Joaquin is the fiercest and brightest and most open-minded lion I know. Thank you for trusting me with your insane talent.'

The 76th edition of the world's oldest film festival wrapped Saturday night after 11 nights of world premieres.

Film - DC - Villain - Phoenix - Arthur

The film, which is loosely based on the DC villain, follows Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, an aspiring stand-up comedian slowly descending into madness and becoming the Joker.

Its world premiere was in Venice on August 31 the movie will debut in the United States on October 4.

Sequel - Works - Film - Phoenix - Joker

A sequel is rumored to be in the works, as well as a film which would see Phoenix’s Joker encounter Robert Pattinson, who was recently chosen to replace Ben Affleck as Batman.
