NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be taking a short break from his NBC sports analyst duties, the station has announced, just hours after he and his family walked away from a horrifying plane crash in Tennessee.

Earnhardt Jr., 44, had been flying to Bristol with his wife, Amy, their 15-month-old daughter Isla, and their family dog, Gus, when his private plane skidded off the runway of Elizabethton Municipal Airport, crashed through a fence and burst into flames.

Elizabethton Fire Chief Barry Carrier described the Earnhardt’s unlikely escape as ‘very lucky’, insisting that ‘everything worked in their favor instead of against them,’ facilitating their survival.

‘We're incredibly grateful that Dale, his wife Amy, daughter Isla, and the two pilots are safe following today's accident,’ NBC Sports said on Twitter.
