SATC author Candace Bushnell on why 'cubbing' (dating much-younger men) differs from being a cougar

Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell is opening up more about her brief dalliance with 'cubbing' — that is, dating much younger guys, in which the man usually peruses the older woman.

Candace, 60, has been candidly documenting her love life since her 30s, but in her new book Is There Still Sex In The City? — and in a new essay for Harper's Bazaar — she illustrates just how different sex and dating can be once a woman reaches a certain age.

'Turns - Lot - Men - Women - Age

'Turns out a lot of 50-something men do not find women their age attractive. In their mind, a woman over 50 is like their mother,' she said. 'But for younger guys, who grew up with the MILF, older women seem exotic. It’s a turn-on.'

Two years after she divorced her husband of ten years, ballet dancer Charles Askegard, in 2011, Candice found herself in a cat and mouse game with a sexy 21-year-old rider she met at a horse competition.

But while she flirted with him, he was the one coming after her, sending her a bottle of wine in a restaurant and trying to get her number.

Candace calls this 'cubbing' — when younger men go for older women. But she points out that it's not the same thing as 'cougaring,' in which the older women are seen as the aggressors.

'The interesting thing about cubbing is that it’s almost always the young guy pursuing the older woman, not the other way around,' she said.

'They want to learn something. They want access to a wider world. They’re looking for an adventure, and so are the women.'
