Incredibly rare butterflies are spotted across the UK for the first time since 2009

Millions of painted lady butterflies have been spotted across the UK in what is believed to be a phenomenon that only happens once every ten years.

The colourful butterflies, which usually live in north Africa and the Mediterranean, have been spotted all over the country.

Roughly 11 million of the butterflies were believed to have been seen during the last UK sighting in 2009.

The unique insects can cover up to 100 miles a day at a speed of 30mph as they migrate across the world to reach our shores.

And their arrival will come as a happy welcome to the Butterfly Conservation Society, who have noted a 'long-term and ongoing decline of UK butterflies'.
