An Army driving instructor who had been drinking at a night club accidentally put his two-tonne pickup truck in reverse and ploughed into a cafe, killing a diner.

Sergeant Lee Humphreys, 44, of the 32nd Regiment of the Royal Artillery, had been socialising with other soldiers at the club while stationed in Belize, a court martial heard.

Ford - F150 - Pickup - Midnight - Home

After he got into his Ford F150 pickup just after midnight to try to drive home, he put it in the wrong gear and careered backwards into four people eating at the cafe.

The heavy blue truck injured three men and ran straight over father of one Jose Molina, from El Salvador, at 15mph, crushing him.

Horrified Humphreys then stood and watched as police moved the truck from the scene of the crash, to release the 43-year-old's body from underneath.

Today he was jailed for five years for causing death by dangerous driving after Bulford Military Court heard he was over the drink-drive limit after spending the night drinking at 'Dream Like City Night Club' before the accident at neighbouring Sonia's Diner in Belize City.

Humphreys had been stationed at the British Army Training and Support Unit Belize (BATSUB).

He had previously worked as a driving instructor in the UK, and drove for the service in 'a professional capacity'.

Prosecutor Ahmed Hossain said: 'Sergeant Humphreys got into the vehicle over the drink drive limit.

'He gave a urine sample at 5.30am which showed he had 165 milligrams of alcohol in his system, when the limit is 107.

'Not only did he make an error and put the vehicle in reverse, but he was also driving at a dangerous speed, despite it being night time and with lots of vulnerable pedestrians around him.
