Frightening footage captured the moment a man was knocked off his feet by floodwater that caused a wall at a subway station in Queens to collapse.

Severe thunderstorms hammered New York City with rain on Wednesday night, and the weight of the runoff proved too much for a temporary construction barrier in the Court Square station.

The deluge swept the straphanger off his feet and nearly dragged him into the path of an arriving train.

The man has not been identified but he is believed to have escaped unscathed - aside from likely emotional trauma.

Video of the incident went viral after it was shared by the Subway Creatures Instagram account.

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer tweeted: 'This is horrifying! @MTA must inspect & secure the construction at the Court Square station before someone gets hurt. This should have never happened!'

MTA - Waterworks - Contractor - Building - Station

The MTA blamed the waterworks on a contractor working on a residential building next to the station which services the 7, E, G and M trains.
