Jacob Rees-Mogg sparked a row after linking England's Cricket World Cup win to Brexit as the team's Irish-born captain Eoin Morgan praised his 'multi-cultural' and multi-faith team declaring: 'Allah was definitely with us'.

The Tory Brexiteer has been lampooned for tweeting: 'We clearly don't need Europe to win' just after Morgan's team beat New Zealand at Lord's in the greatest game of cricket in history.

While Eoin Morgan's words have been widely praised with Piers Morgan saying: 'Great line from Captain @Eoin16. Brilliantly unifying to see such a diverse England team become World Champions'.

Mr Rees-Mogg's tweet sparked 8,000 replies with many reminding him that Morgan hails from Dublin and four of the team including heroes Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were born and raised abroad.

Fellow Tory Ed Vaisey replied: 'Slightly misjudging the mood there, @Jacob_Rees_Mogg . But while you're on, the English captain is Irish'.
