Nationwide bosses plan to build 239 homes in Swindon

The UK’s largest building society is returning to its roots by constructing one of the first garden villages since the 1920s.

Nationwide has been granted planning permission for a 239-home development for sale or rent in its home town of Swindon – an echo of the past when businesses built houses for their workers.

Village - People - Site - Walcot - Town

The not-for-profit village is for local people near the site in Walcot, outside the town centre, with 30 per cent of properties for affordable housing. Properties should be on the market by spring 2021.

It marks the return of a theory promoted by the likes of George Cadbury, who built Bournville village around Cadbury’s Birmingham factory, and Victorian manufacturer...
