Indonesia could be hit by a tsunami after an earthquake struck deep under the Molucca Sea.

The quake measured 6.9 on the Richter Scale, hitting 15 miles below the sea's surface and 115 miles south east of Manado between North Maluku and North Sulawesi late on Sunday night.

People living in the city of Ternate in the Maluku island chain feared for their lives after tremors sent them running for higher ground.

Experts claim the quake triggered waves of nearly 2ft for parts of North Sulawesi and North Maluku.
