The former head of MI6 has suggested that potential prime ministers Boris Johnson, Jeremy Hunt and Jeremy Corbyn would be weaker than past leaders.
Sir John Sawers today issued a public slap down to the three men vying for the keys to Number 10 - saying that the UK could have a prime minister who 'does not have the standing that we have become used to in our top leadership'.

The ex-spymaster also said that turbulence in Westminster and Brexit uncertainty is tantamount to 'political nervous breakdown' which has infected Whitehall with anxiety.
Mr Johnson and Mr Hunt are currently locked in a race for the Tory crown while the Labour leader has reportedly put his party on a war footing for a snap general election which could see him propelled into Downing Street.

'We have potential prime ministers being elected by the Conservative Party now, in the shape of the leader of the Opposition, who do not have the standing that we have become used to in our top leadership.

'Whether people can develop that when they become prime minister, we will have to wait and see, in terms of the candidates for the Conservative leadership.
'But I think there is a lot of anxiety, as we leave the European Union we take a huge risk to our international standing, to the strength of the British economy.
