A bourbon whiskey warehouse has caught fire in Kentucky, destroying 45,000 barrels of the state's signature spirit.

The blaze broke out at two of the Jim Beam warehouses in Versailles near Lexington on Tuesday night, possibly after a lightning strike.

Fire crews put one of the blazes out, but the other kept burning for hours and emergency workers say it is still too hot to investigate what happened.

No injuries have been reported but the contents have been destroyed and whiskey has started running into local rivers.

Ryan Hermens, a photographer, said the smell of bourbon was 'filling the air' at the scene of the fire.

The fire is being allowed to burn in order to stop the runoff into local rivers getting worse.

'The longer it burns, the more of the distilled spirits burn with it,' said Woodford County emergency management director Drew Chandler.
