NYC subway riders spontaneously start singing the Backstreet Boys

Uplifting footage shows the moment a New York City subway car of passengers burst into song together on an evening train ride on Sunday.

The funny moment started when one passenger played the Backstreet Boys hit, 'I want it that way', on speakerphone.

New - Yorkers - Spirit

Suddenly, the New Yorkers were overcome by a communal spirit and began singing along.

One of the passengers, Joel Wertheimer, posted a clip of the singing on Twitter, which has been viewed 1.1 million times.

He wrote: 'Had a really tough week and tonight I was the subway and some guy walks between train cars, shirtless, bumping a speaker.

'I wasn't in the mood for Showtime particularly. But sometimes people and life surprise you and a little magic happens.'
