CrossFit criticized Facebook’s arbitrary censorship practices in a Thursday statement, announcing that the company “will no longer support or use Facebook’s services until further notice.” CrossFit will also stop using Facebooks Instagram and WhatsApp platforms.
Estimated to have a $4 billion valuation by Forbes in 2017, CrossFit is an exercise and fitness brand licensing its trademark to partnered gyms. The company’s business model also sells training certifications and sponsors the CrossFit Games, an athletic fitness competition held annually.
Statement - CrossFit - Orthodoxies - Health - Wisdom
In its statement, CrossFit rejected what it described as flawed orthodoxies related to “fitness, health, and nutrition.” Conventional wisdom pushed by “overreaching governments, malicious competitors, and corrupt academic organizations” has driven “a tsunami or chronic disease upon our friends, families, and communities,” assessed the company.
The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) latest dietary guidelines recommend that carbohydrate-rich foods compose at least half of a person’s volume of food, without specific instruction regarding the shares of total calories to be allotted to carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
CrossFit - Example - Facebook - Censorship - Banting7DayMealPlan
CrossFit highlighted a recent example of Facebook’s censorship in which Banting7DayMealPlan — a user-group with 1.65 million users focusing on low-carbohydrate and high-fat diets — was deleted without warning. It was subsequently restored, without explanation.
“Facebook’s action should give any serious person reason to pause, especially those of us engaged in activities contrary to prevailing opinion,” warned CrossFit.
CrossFit - Facebook - Control - Flow - Information
CrossFit noted Facebook’s growing control over the flow of information, describing the technology company as “the de facto authority over the public square,” cautioning of the company’s increasing power amidst a lack of “transparency” and “due process” with respect Facebook’s censorship of speech and expression.
Describing itself as a “contrarian” outfit, CrossFit concluded that it cannot continue its use of Facebook while the social media company operates in bad faith with its users.
