Vengeful ex-husband who blew up his marital home jailed for five years and four months

A vengeful ex-husband who blew up his marital home with him and his former wife inside was today jailed for five years and four months.

Ian Clowes, 68, was due to be evicted on the day he triggered an 'almighty explosion' and almost killed both him and ex-wife Elaine Clowes, a court heard.

She was found alive amid a pile rubble in her bedroom while Mr Clowes suffered serious burns that caused him to spend six weeks in a medically induced coma.

Bournemouth Crown Court heard that after the couple's marriage ended in 2015 the semi-detached home they shared in Poole, Dorset, was converted into two flats the pair lived in.

Mr - Clowes - Floor - Property - Elaine

Mr Clowes was living on the upper floor of the semi-detached property while Elaine stayed downstairs, but was about to be evicted after she won ownership of the whole property, neighbours claimed at the time.

It later transpired that Mr Clowes, a house clearer, suffered 'severe financial difficulties' and allowed the insurance on the building to run out.

A court order was issued allowing 63-year-old Mrs Clowes to gain control of both flats.

She had planned to sell the upstairs flat and stay in her own, with the £65,000 proceeds going to Clowes, who was said to be unhappy with the arrangement.

According to neighbours Clowes had spent £40,000 renovating the bottom floor flat after the couple's separation in 2016.

He had planned to do the same to the upstairs apartment, before selling them on for a profit.

Stuart Ellacott, prosecuting, said he acted out of malice in destroying the 1930s property by opening the valve of a gas canister in his all-electric flat and igniting it.
