A Massachusetts man is expected to appear in federal court on Monday after police say he attacked two Appalachian Trail hikers with a machete in Wythe County, Virginia, killing one of them and severely injuring the other.
James L. Jordan, 30, of West Yarmouth, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with murder and assault with intent to murder early Saturday morning, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen.

Authorities haven't released the names of the attacker's victims, one man and one woman.
But one of the victims died at a hospital on Sunday, according to an emailed statement from the Wythe County Sheriff's Office.
