This is the moment a Brazilian policeman allegedly battered a café owner after she mistakenly added barbeque sauce to his beef burger order, as he faces up to eight and a half years in jail for the assault.

Security cameras caught the moment Corporal Augusto Santana, 34, apparently launched into a brutal attack on Liz Pacheco in which she thought she might die.

The horrific footage was captured at the Nubia Lanches in Jacarepaguá, in the west zone Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Police concluded their investigations into the aggression and charged Santana with four counts of assault, including grievous bodily harm, subjecting the victim to severe embarrassment, threatening behaviour and misrepresenting himself as a detective.

Santana, who has been remanded in custody since the incident happened around midnight on March 21 this year, was denied bail by criminal court Judge Caio David who took a dim view of the offence, describing the accused as a 'dangerous individual' and the crime as a 'cowardly' assault.

Ms Pacheco, who fainted during the attack, has been running the late night sandwich bar for four years with her partner, Matheus Morata. He was not at the store when the violence occurred but arrived shortly after the suspect left and took her to hospital.
