The mother of Greta Thunberg has revealed her family have received threats over the Swedish activist's newfound fame as the unlikely leader of the climate change movement.
The 16 year old, who shot into the public consciousness when she skipped school in protest over the world's inaction on global warming, has become a 'hate figure'.

Her speeches have inspired thousands of other schoolchildren to join her strike, and she has spoken at the House of Commons and the European Parliament, and addressed Extinction Rebellion protesters at Marble Arch.
Despite not yet being old enough to vote in her home country, the impassioned teenager and her family have been barraged with criticism.

Speaking on TV4 Nyhetsmorgon, her mother, opera singer Malena Ernman, said: '[The hardest part is] to receive as much criticism and hatred and threats as we get, to keep both children healthy and also get some sleep in between.'
Ernman, who was Sweden's entry in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest, has two children with actor Svante Thunberg - Greta and Beata.

She has been incredibly supportive of Greta's crusade, with the family giving up flying and going vegan in 2016. They also installed solar batteries, started growing their own vegetables and cycled everywhere, keeping an electric car for emergencies.
Greta, who visited the UK to talk to MPs including John Bercow, Jeremy Corbyn and Ed Miliband earlier this week, travels by train despite the long distances, keeping her Twitter followers updated along the way.
