A man who was nearly paralysed when a huge pile of wood fell on him and broke his back has turned his life around and got in the shape of his life.

Chris Arpino, who runs his own furniture business, was crushed by a 380kg (60st) pile of wood at work in 2009.

Years - Kidney - Ordeal - Times - Week

He couldn't walk for two years and lost a kidney in the ordeal but he now gets up at 3.30am three times a week to sculpt his physique.

The father-of-one, who lived in Bude, Cornwall at the time, split with his partner during his recovery. He said: 'I had it all and lost it all'.

Mr - Arpino - Sheets - Wood - Work

Mr Arpino was trying to move some 8ft by 4ft (2.4m x 1.2m) sheets of wood at work when a pile of them which were leaning against a wall fell on top of him.

'I went to pull one off and 17 of them fell on top of me, he told Cornwall Live. 'That’s about 380kg of timber.

'I - Bench - Fall - Damage - Bench

'I landed on a wooden bench behind me which broke the fall. That’s what did the damage as I got crushed between the bench behind me and the wood.'

Soon afterwards, the bench he had landed on collapsed and the metal parts of it took the weight of the fallen...
