Abby Johnson was not just any Planned Parenthood employee. She had a meteoric rise through the organization. She went from a “volunteer escort” to being becoming the youngest clinic director in the organization. She was even named employee of the year.
But then something changed. Despite having had two abortions herself, she had never actually watched an abortion on the ultrasound screen. When that happened, Johnson’s life was shattered. At that moment she saw abortion for what it was, and she collapsed in the bathroom. She was so shocked, she ends up switching sides–literally. She goes from the abortion clinic to join the pro-life movement on the other side of the clinic’s fence.

This is the story of “Unplanned” (in theatres now), which is an adaptation of the book by the same title. Seeing this movie will give you a small glimpse into the world behind the doors a typical abortion clinic. You meet the employees, but more importantly, you meet the women who go there looking for an end to their “problem.”
Johnson was one of those women. She entered college as marginally “pro-life.” How marginally? Well, marginally enough that she was persuaded to volunteer at a Planned Parenthood to help women get inside despite the presence of protesters. This was not a comfortable job, and she soon left it. But after getting pregnant by an older man, she went to the clinic for an abortion herself, and then soon returned to help there.

She was an effective abortion counselor because she had empathy. It seemed that many of the other employees there lacked sympathy for the young ladies going in for an abortion, but not Abby. She knew what they were going through, and she wanted to help.
