Former first lady Michelle Obama thinks America is like a broken family, and the presidency of Donald Trump is like living with a “divorced dad.”
Michelle O was promoting her new autobiography on Sunday when she sat down with comedian Steven Colbert for a staged interview at London’s O2 Arena in which she discussed the “dark chapter” of American politics since her husband left office in 2017.

“We come from a broken family, we are a little unsettled,” Obama said of America in 2019. “Sometimes you spend the weekend with divorced dad. That feels like fun but then you get sick. That is what America is going through. We are living with divorced dad.”
Obama explained she shy away from attacking Trump in her new book, which details her life from her upbringing in Chicago through her time as first lady. In London, she also discussed her family’s transition to the White House, Barack Obama’s eight years as president, and her struggles to come to terms with the new political reality in the years since.

“When I am not emotionally able to deal with it I turn it off for a moment,” she said. “I only let some of that stuff into my world when I’m ready. You can’t have a steady diet of fear and frustration coming in.”
