Michael Avenatti vows to be exonerated after appearing in California federal court on fraud charges

A week after Avenatti's shocking arrest in New York, the attorney famous for representing porn star Stormy Daniels in legal battles against President Donald Trump was back in federal court Monday to face fraud charges in California.

Avenatti waived his right to a preliminary hearing on Monday.

April - Lawyer - Waiver - Attorneys - Behalf

He’s scheduled to be arraigned April 29, but his lawyer says he may seek a waiver so his attorneys can appear on his behalf.

After the hearing, Avenatti walked out of the courthouse with his lawyers and gave a statement to the press.

'For nearly 20 years I’ve represented Davids versus Goliaths as an attorney,' he told reporters.

'Throughout that entire time period I've relied upon the justice system and judges sitting in courthouses just like this.

'I - Time - Connection - Case - Case

'I will now spend the time in connection with this case and the case in New York relying on that same justice system that I have now subjected myself to.

'I am highly confident that when the process plays out that justice will be done.'

Avenatti - Charges - Client - Court - Settlement

Avenatti, 48, faces charges of misusing a client’s monetary court settlement.

The lawyer is alleged to have fraudulently obtained $4million in bank loans and pocketed $1.6 million that belonged to a client.

US - District - Court - Indictment - New

He is charged in a separate U.S. District Court indictment in New York with what prosecutors said was an attempt to 'shake down' Nike Inc for more than $20million.

He was released on $300,000 bond in the New York case and has repeatedly proclaimed his innocence of all charges.

Avenatti - Allegations - Client - Partner - Money

Avenatti has long faced allegations from a former client and a former partner that he was hiding money to avoid paying what he owed.
