Maduro's Venezuelan regime strips opposition leader Juan Guaido of public office for 15 years

Nicolas Maduro's fragile Venezuelan regime has escalated its aggression towards opposition leader Juan Guaido by banning him from holding public office for 15 years.

The government today accused Guaido of having irregularities in his financial records, but this was widely interpreted as another move by Maduro to tighten his grip on power amid protests calling for him to step down.

Election - Campaign - Allegations - Corruption - Fraud

It comes after a controversial general election campaign mired in allegations of corruption and fraud saw Maduro declare victory despite foreign powers, including President Donald Trump, recognising Guaido as the legitimate leader.

But the incumbent Maduro has secured the backing of Russia and China, turning the Latin American oil-producing nation into a flashpoint for geopolitical tensions.

Guaido - National - Assembly - Prohibition - State

Guaido, who heads the National Assembly, immediately dismissed this new prohibition announced on state television by Maduro's Auditor General Elvis Amoroso as invalid.

He said: 'He is not auditor general.... The legitimate congress is the only one with power to designate an auditor general.'
