Weekend Box Office: ‘Us’ Nabs $70 Million, the Third Highest Horror Opening Ever

In the immortal words of Hollywood’s newly-crowned Thickest Dad Winston Duke, “You wanna’ get crazy, we can get crazy.” Because crazy is exactly how to describe the opening of Us, which sheared $70 million in its first weekend. Jordan Peele‘s sophomore feature more than doubled the $33 million debut of Get Out, and now stands as the third highest horror opening ever behind Andy Muschietti‘s IT ($123 million) and David Gordon Green‘s Halloween ($76 million).

As far as films that aren’t adapted from existing IP or a sequel, Us officially has the second highest opening ever. The only film to beat it in that arena? James Cameron‘s Avatar, quite literally the highest-grossing film of all time.
