A retired detective is convinced the patriarch of his family is the perpetrator of one of America's most notorious unsolved murderers.

Steve Hodel believes his father George, a well-known surgeon based in Los Angeles is the Black Dahlia killer and could also be responsible for a spate of other brutal unsolved murders.

Hodel - LAPD - Homicide - Detective - Father

Hodel, a retired LAPD homicide detective, said his father could be the suspect due to the way the body of the Black Dahlia victim was cut up which could only have been learned by someone who attended medical school.

Elizabeth Short, an aspiring actress, was found dead in a vacant lot in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles in January 1947.

Her face had been slashed from cheek to jaw and her body was left positioned on the ground in two halves with the blood drained from it.

Police considered Hodel as a suspect as he had come to the attention of authorities following the death of his secretary, Ruth Spaulding, by a drug overdose in 1945.

However the Black Dahlia case has never been solved and is currently the focus of TNT’s new series 'I Am the Night', which was co-created by Patty Jenkins.

The show stars Chris Pine as a roving LA reporter seeking the truth about the mysterious doctor.

Steve - Hodel - New - York - Post

Steve Hodel told the New York Post: 'The killer had performed a hemicorporectomy on her [Short].

'It’s a unique procedure that was taught at medical school in the 1930s, when he was there, where you cut between the second and third lumbar vertebrae.

'It - Way - Body - Bone

He added: 'It’s the only way you can divide a body without cutting through bone.'

Hodel is working to prove his late father's guilt and has been writing and researching about the case for decades.
