Few foods are as effortlessly arousing as bacon. Whether it’s the smell of it cooking, the sight of those glistening-yet-crispy rashers on the plate or that salty, fatty, meaty taste, bacon is the romantic all-rounder you need to take someone from ”crush” to “bae”.

With that in mind, these surprisingly easy-to-make candied bacon roses are the ultimate Valentine’s Day gift. As beautiful as a bunch of freshly-cut flowers, yet bursting with the flavour of bacon and maple syrup, they’re guaranteed to get anyone (except, we’ll admit, vegetarians and vegans) in the mood for love.

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.

2. Remove the petals from the plastic roses, keeping the leaves and the “sepals” surrounding the petals in place. Discard the petals. Drive a wooden toothpick into the centre of each plastic rose stem, leaving at least 2.5cm exposed.
