There was a Life of Brian moment in that corner of the Commons chamber where Tory backbench Remainers sit and smoulder.

Nicky Morgan (Loughborough) has been cast out by her former friends Anna Soubry (Broxtowe), Justine Greening (Putney) and deadly Dr Phillip Lee (Bracknell).

Honker - Nicky - Love - Path - Purity

Honker Nicky, poor love, has been punished for straying from the path of purity. Her crime? She talked to pro-Brexit colleagues. Collaborating with the enemy!

Theresa May had come to the Commons shortly before lunch yesterday to make one of her artfully uninformative statements on Brexit. These have acquired a Kafkaesque quality, the terminology being technical, the so-called negotiations never advancing any faster than a subterranean stalactite.

Yesterday - Prime - Minister - Work - House

Yesterday the Prime Minister talked of her ‘ongoing work’ and she told the House that she was pursuing ‘further talks’ with the European Union. MPs groaned.

Up in Tory Remainer corner, the Reg of the operation, Beaconsfield’s Dominic Grieve, admired his fingernails. Near him twitched Comrade Soubry, sitting between Sister Greening and Brother Lee. Listening to Mrs May, they settled for the occasional ‘tsk’ and disbelieving shake of the head.

Mrs - Morgan - Band - Desperadoes - Evil

Mrs Morgan used to sit with this little band of desperadoes. No more. Not since she started consorting with the evil, evil Brexiteers and a few like-minded Centrists. Yesterday she was a few yards along the bench, on the other side of Government suck-up Simon Hoare (N Dorset).

When Mrs Morgan was given a chance to put a question she mentioned that she had been invited by Mrs May to join the ‘alternative arrangements working group’ which is trying to glue together some agreement between Europhiles and Eurosceptics.
