After her stellar performance in last year’s series “Escape at Dannemora,” it would be understandable if Patricia Arquette wanted to take a break from playing characters based on real individuals caught up in an unbelievable crime saga outside of their control. Yet, the Oscar-winning actress is back in that mode again, this time on the new Hulu series “The Act.” Arquette plats Dee Dee Blancharde, a Missouri mother caring for a child whose ailments she would tell anyone who’d listen. Her daughter Gypsy (Joey King) has a cheery disposition and is the counterbalance of positivity to her mother’s protective nature.
But, as tends to happen in true crime anthology series, things take a bit of an unexpected turn. Somewhere beyond the meticulous meal preparation and diligent wheelchair pushing, this first look at the series shows how it eventually ends up in a courtroom.
