Water skiing, playing tennis, fishing off the beach, digging in the sand, driving with the windows down—these are the halcyon scenes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill’s time spent with their children at Andy Warhol’s massive estate in Montauk. The footage was shot by the legendary poet and avant-garde filmmaker, Jonas Mekas; who died last month at the age of 96 in his Brooklyn home.

It was the summer of 1972 and Lee Radziwill rented out the main cottage on Andy Warhol’s 5-home beach side compound that he called Eothen. The humble, clapboard vacation home became a sweet respite for Radziwill, her sister Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and their four children. During this time, Kennedy employed Jonas Mekas- an icon in New York City’s underground film world-to teach her children, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Caroline Kennedy, photography and film making while on vacation in Long Island’s eastern most tip.

The cousins, Caroline and Tina link arms and stay close during the family outing to Chinatown while Kennedy mischievously tries on a woven sedge hat for the camera.
