Police in Chinese city roll out drones to catch reckless drivers at the start of Lunar New Year

Traffic police in a city in south-west China have deployed two drones to help officers catch reckless drivers on busy roads.

The new scheme, implemented in Chongqing's Hechuan district over the weekend, aims to help officers track drivers who stray over lane markers and commit dangerous driving offenses such as illegal passing, according to the district government.

Police in China face higher pressure to maintain traffic safety as more than 2.46 billion people are expected to hit the roads during the Spring Festival travel rush.

'In order to ensure smooth traffic, Hechuan traffic police will employ two drones to help officers perform law enforcement duties,' according to the Hechuan District press office in a statement on Weibo.

'The - Vehicle - Traffic - Violations - Roads

'The unmanned aerial vehicle can capture in real-time any traffic violations on parallel roads including changing lanes illegally and causing congestion,' the statement added.

The drones hover above the roads and send the images back to officers on the ground.
