Nancy Pelosi, as you may have heard, is trying to cancel the State of the Union because of the government shutdown. Her excuse is that the Secret Service, having been affected by the partial shutdown, wouldn’t be able to provide security. When they said they could, she told reporters, “I don’t care what they said.”
You can say this about President Donald Trump: When he denied a military aircraft for a Democratic congressional delegation headed over to Belgium on Thursday, he didn’t exactly offer a defense other than the fact that the party — especially its nominal leader — ought to be back in Washington negotiating an end to the shutdown.
Lot - Disagreement - Point - Democrats - Shutdown
There shouldn’t have been a whole lot of disagreement over this point if the Democrats do actually want to end the shutdown. And yet, it had members of the Democratic caucus whining vociferously over the decision.
“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over. In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” the president said in a letter, according to Fox News.
Period - Washington - Strong - Border - Security
“I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown. Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.”
Perhaps it was the fact that the decision was made just minutes before the delegation was supposed to depart for Belgium. Perhaps it was the fact that there was allegedly no stop in Egypt. Perhaps it’s the fact Democrats seemed not to...
