It is the wildly popular gangster drama set in early 20th century Birmingham.

And fans went wild as it was confirmed that filming has wrapped on the hotly-anticipated fifth season of Peaky Blinders.

A post on the BBC drama's official Twitter account on Thursday confirmed that filming would conclude the next day, with the post accompanied by a moody photo of show star Cillian Murphy and director Anthony Byrne on day one of production.

The caption read: 'Tomorrow we wrap filming series 5 of #PeakyBlinders. Here’s a throwback to Cillian and director Anthony Byrne on the first day of filming, all those months ago. #ThrowbackThursday.'

The drama is set to be released at some point in 2019 - with show bosses keeping coy over the exact air date.

Fans quickly went wild over the news, and flocked to social media to share their delight.

While the drama is set in Birmingham, filming has taken place across Manchester in recent months.

Series five is set in the aftermath of the 1929 Wall Street Crash, with creator Steven Knight revealing: 'The story of the Peaky Blinders and of the Shelby family gets woven into the political fabric of Britain and Europe as the 1920s end and the thirties begin.
