People reveal their biggest culture shocks after moving to a new country

Moving to a different country throws up a number of culture shocks - as an internet thread has been revealing.

Contributors have been commenting on the differences between their new home and native countries that they never quite expected, from the exuberant abundance of toothpaste in the U.S to the shock of naked people in spas in Germany.

A trip to a chemist to buy toothpaste provided South African '748point2' with their biggest culture shock.

They wrote on Reddit: 'There are so many more options for what basically boil down to the exact same thing.

'The one that really got me was the toothpaste - there was an entire freaking wall of variations on mint toothpaste. I had a panic attack the first time I went to a store by myself.'

'MorasEscritoras - Lack - Touching - Move - Mexico

For 'MorasEscritoras' a lack of physical touching is what shocked him most about his move from Mexico to the US.

He explained: 'In Mexican culture, it's normal to hug and air kiss classmates and coworkers, even people you're just meeting.

While - US - Distance - Everyone - Anyone

'After a while in the US, I got used to keeping a distance with everyone, not touching anyone, not sharing food, etc.

'Then I went back to work in Mexico for a few months and I remembered how normal it is for people to invade your personal space without any hesitation, or just touch you without consent. It threw me off.'

Reddit - User - 'old_cat_spinster - Differences - Brits

One Reddit user, 'old_cat_spinster', picked out several differences between Brits and Kiwis.

But one stark difference she says is how people from New Zealand are 'super super chilled' but also 'really hardcore'.

'If - Hill - Mountain - Hike - Hours

She explained: 'If they say it’s a hill - it’s a mountain. If they say it’s a short hike it’s at least five hours.'
