Coronation Street star Shayne Ward was snubbed for the Best Serial Drama Performance at the 2019 National Television Awards, despite being praised for his harrowing male suicide plot.

After exiting the role of Aidan Connor in May - following emotional scenes which saw his character commit suicide off-screen - many fans were convinced he was a shoe-in for the gong, awarded specifically to performances in soaps.

Nominees - Shayne - Corrie - Co-star - Jack

But instead the nominees included Shayne's Corrie co-star Jack P Shepherd, Emmerdale's Lucy Pargeter and Emma Atkins and EastEnders' Danny Dyer and Bonnie Langford.

Shayne was praised for his performance as embattled Aidan Connor, as part of a dark storyline to raise awareness of male mental health.

Dark - Scenes - Aftermath - Aidan - Death

Dark scenes also showed the aftermath of Aidan's death in regards to how his family coped, with his final scenes showing the character break down in tears while alone in his flat.

Sadly Shayne missed out on the prize in favour of co-star Jack, who was also praised for his portrayal of David Platt in a dark male rape storyline.

Rivalry - Actors - Shayne - Twitter - Nominations

But there doesn't seem to be any substantial rivalry between the two actors, as Shayne took to Twitter soon after the nominations were announced to write: 'Whoop! Congratulations @JackPShepherd88 @asmardell27 on being shortlisted @OfficialNTAs.'

Jack was also praised for his performance after David was raped by 'friend' Josh, with the fallout leaving the character a broken man.

Soap - Star - Soap - Award - Best

The soap star previously won the British Soap Award for Best Actor following the harrowing scenes, though again nothing was played out on-screen.

After weeks of battling with his demons, David finally brought closure on his ordeal by driving Josh out of the Street, as he had been left in hospital after being assaulted for trying to do the same thing.

Award - Emmerdale - Star
