Lawyer accused of crafting El Chapo's 2015 prison escape is released from jail after posting bail

The lead lawyer, who once represented El Chapo Guzman and is accused of being the mastermind behind the drug kingpin's 2015 jail escape, has been released from pretrial detention.

Oscar Manuel Gomez Nunez was reportedly set free on Saturday after a court determined that the aiding a prison escapee was not considered a major crime.

He posted bail and will now fight his court case as a free man, according to various news outlets.

Gomez Nunez was arrested in October 2015 along with five others after El Chapo's daring July 2015 escape from the Altiplano maximum-security prison located in Almoloya de Juarez, a town in the state of Mexico.

The lawyer was ruled a prime suspect after he had met with El Chapo hours before.

El Chapo landed back inside the Altiplano facility after he fled the Puente Grande maximum-security facility in January 2001.

According to one version of his first escape, El Chapo jumped into large laundry cart while serving the eighth year of a 20-year prison sentence for the 1993 murder of Cardinal Juan Jesus Posadas Ocampo.

Another story says two prison officials opened a door and let him walk out.
