Pat Haden, the outgoing athletic director at the University of Southern California, has raised eyebrows because of his lucrative part-time charity work recently unveiled by a Los Angeles Times investigation.

Haden, his daughter, and sister-in-law collected $2.4 million from the George Henry Mayr Foundation for part-time roles between 1999 and 2014, the Times reported. During that time, "scholarship spending plunged to a three-decade low and the size of its endowment stagnated" wrote the Times.

Their roles reportedly involved as little as an hour of work per week. Haden, who was an adviser to the foundation in 1998 and was named board chairman the following year, claimed $1.2 million.

The $25-million foundation provides youth with scholarships to California educational institutions.

The Times examined the foundation’s federal tax returns from 1999 to 2014, revealing that the foundation paid board fees as high as $84,000 to Haden. His sister-in-law, Catherine Grier Olson, received more than...
