Comcast, one of the dominant telecom companies in the U.S. with more than 29 million business and residential customers, said on social media that it was working to restore services to affected customers. The company hasn’t said how many customers have been affected or how long it would take to restore service.
“One of Comcast’s large backbone network partners had a fiber cut that we believe is also impacting other providers,” the Philadelphia-based company posted on Twitter on Friday afternoon.

Fiber networks transmit vast amounts of internet traffic, processing everything from online purchases to 911 calls.
A company representative didn’t return calls for comment.
